A payment gateway is a service provided by a specialist company who authorise payments on your ecommerce website. Every ecommerce website uses a payment gateway which essentially does the same job as the 'chip & pin' machines in shops.
A payment gateway comes into effect once the customer places an order. The payment gateway automatically performs a number of checks to protect you and your bank from fraud, such as checking the payment card details are correct, and the account has the necessary funds available. This is done securely and behind the scenes to ensure your customer never leaves you website, which gives them added confidence in you.
Upon completing the checks the payment gateway will approve or decline the transaction, in much the same way as a 'chip & pin' machine.
Summary of the payment gateway process
- Your customer shops on your website and adds products to their basket
- When the customer is ready they visit the checkout and enter their payment card details
- The customer clicks 'place order' and their payment card details are sent securely to the payment gateway
- The payment gateway performs the necessary checks and provides feedback (approved or declined) to the website
- If approved the website thanks the customer for their order and logs it for you to manage
- If declined the website informs them why the payment was declined (e.g. lack of funds) and gives them the option to re-enter their card details
Is this safe & secure?
Yes. Every website uses a payment gateway service and these days the systems are incredibly secure. The problems you hear about in the news are due to companies storing payment card data on their systems, which subsequently get hacked into. Most ecommerce websites never see or store their customers payment card details, and we ensure the same is true for you. In doing so we can ensure you remain PCI compliant, which is a legal requirement.
